Vladimir Kagan was a renowned American furniture designer whose illustrious career spanned nearly seven decades. Born in Germany in 1927, he moved to the US in 1938 with his family to escape from the Nazi regime. He studied architecture at Columbia and gained experience working with his father, a master cabinetmaker in his woodworking shop. Kagan established his own shop in New York in 1949 and released his first furniture collection soon after, receiving the Museum of Modern Art, New York Good Design Award for his wrought-iron chair. Kagan's designs earned acclaim for their avant-garde craftsmanship and practicality, characterized by sensuous, organic forms with exaggerated, curved lines. He used various materials such as acrylic, aluminum, brass, and above all, wood to produce his designs. Kagan's work was highly sought after by a host of celebrity clientele ranging from Marilyn Monroe to Tom Ford. He lent his innovative design to Disneyland's Monsanto House of the Future in 1964, and to the lobby redesign of the Downtown Los Angeles Standard Hotel in 2002. Kagan lectured extensively on the history of modern furniture design at several institutions, including Parsons School of Design, Yale, and Philadelphia University. He was elected president of the American Society of Interior Designers New York Chapter in 1990 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, and the American Society of Furniture Designers. Kagan was inducted into the Interior Designer Hall of Fame in 2009, a fitting tribute to his legacy as a visionary designer. Vladimir Kagan passed away in 2016 but left behind an artistic legacy and a lifetime of creative achievements that continue to inspire designers and furniture lovers worldwide.
