The "Snow" floor lamp by VIco Magistretti for O-Luce, Italy, 1970 boasts a magnificent, white plexiglas shade and rests on a circular Carrara marble base. This exquisite piece is in good condition and is a testament to the genius of Magistretti - a founding father of modern Italian design. With a belief that "There is no excuse for bad design," Magistretti's work is characterized by an intelligent blend of form and function evident in his range of mid-century furnishings, including stylish and deceptively simple table lamps, sofas, and armchairs. Born in Milan, Magistretti studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan and fled to Switzerland during World War II, where he met his inspiration and mentor, renowned architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers. Together, they collaborated on several rebuilding projects and Magistretti designed his first architectural masterpiece - a "poetic" round church, for the QT8, an experimental Milanese neighborhood. It wasn't until the 1950s that he expanded his talents into design, while working with furniture artisans. In the 1960s, his 30-year working relationship with Cesare Cassina of the Cassina furniture manufacturing company began - characterized by a shared vision of the relationship between modernity and tradition. Though their friendship was not without its struggles, Magistretti's genius continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
