These are a stunning pair of iconic Italian "Maralunga" armchairs and two-seater sofas, designed by VIco Magistretti for Cassina during the mid-century modern era. The original knitted wool upholstery in ivory is intact and in impressive condition. The adjustable headrests enhance their cheeky and timeless design. At 40 inches (100 cm) when fully extended, the height is reduced to 30 inches (71 cm) when compressed. In line with some settings, the natural wear and tear of the knitted wool upholstery represents an acceptable patina. Alternatively, they're equally suitable for re-covering by decorators. They are entirely clean, structurally sound and purchased from a well-maintained smoke and pet-free estate in Germany. Recalled as one of the best design stories, the legend behind the Maralunga sofa epitomizes the creative process of this Scandinavian designer. Following initial disgust and a failed prototype, a distinguished punch from Cesare Cassina deconstructed the sofa. In response, Magistretti adjusted the piece and created a brand new adjustable-height headrest model, debuted by Cassina in 1973. The Maralunga sofa graciously blends in with today's interiors, despite its initial boxy and slumped appearance. It has two functions, making it perfect for both social interactions and solitary relaxation. Magistretti captured the essence of his design by saying "My intention with Maralunga was to design an object that represented a whole range of interior architecture with a familiar feel. Two positions, two possible uses, two different ways to create your own personal space inside a room." Cassina currently produces the Maralunga sofa in various upholstery options, and in 2014, they commissioned various designers to reinterpret the piece in celebration of its 40th anniversary.
