The Panton chair holds considerable significance as an iconic example of modern design, with a noteworthy history of experimentation by Verner Panton to perfect the chair's form using various materials. The widely recognized versions of this chair feature Luran-S, a polystyrene thermoplastic in various colors, along with the contemporary-style variant in flexible polypropylene. However, the chair was initially crafted by VItra using laborious cold-molded Baydur HR, reinforced by fiberglass polyester resin foam that was then primed and painted. Despite the significant time and effort involved, the resulting chair had an elegant sculptural quality and a more weighty, substantial feel, with no visible reinforcement required. These chairs lacked the stereotypical "plastic" feel. In 1979, VItra stopped production of the Panton chair, but Horn GmbH & Co. KG in Rudersberg resurrected the design in 1983, using HR foam and selling it through the WK association. The Horn GmbH & Co. KG chairs comprised Panton's signature at the bottom rear and were created using the same technique as the original production. This blue chair in question belongs to that production period and has gained a desirable character with age and use. However, if one desires a pristine look, repainting would be a simple option.
