Our Master of Wine, David Allen looks at an Austrian Sauvignon Blanc from the Sudsteiermark DAC, Weingut Tement's Kalk & Kreide 2021 Sauvignon Blanc. Weingut Tement is a wine estate in the Sudsteiermark region of Austria. It is based in Ehrenhausen, very close to the border with Slovenia, and grows vines in both countries. Key grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Morillon (Chardonnay), Welschriesling and Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). Wines range from dry to very sweet Trockenbeerenauslese. The core of production is white wine, though the estate makes "RT" (Red Tement), a blend of Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is aged for six years in small oak casks and is very age-worthy. The same maturation is used for the Zweigelt Selection. Manfred Tement took over the small family winery at a young age, when his father passed away. There were just three hectares (7.4 acres) of vines situated on either side of the family home. Today his sons Armin and Stefan run the business. The family now has ten vineyards, one of which lies in Slovenia. The best are located on higher slopes facing southeast to southwest. Organic farming has been practised for some years; the vineyards gained Biodynamic certification from Demeter in 2022. The most prestigious site is Weingut Tement's parcel in the Ried Zieregg STK Grand Cru. These vines lie between 330 and 490 meters and face south to southwest. The soils are heavily influenced by the subsoil strata of coralline limestone reef which is prevalent in much of Sudsteiermark. Weissburgunder, Morillon and Sauvignon Blanc are grown here.
