Sergio Rodrigues' signature piece, the Mole sofa, was created between 1956 and 1957, and became the inspiration for the famous and award-winning Mole armchair. The word "Mole" means "Soft" in Portuguese, with both furniture items featuring solid wood frames, adjustable leather support straps, and luxurious leather cushions that are oversized and floppy. The Mole concept was developed by Rodrigues in response to a request from photographer Otto Stupakoff, who needed a comfortable two-seater sofa for his studio. Although initially unpopular, the Mole soon became an icon and is now one of the most famous pieces of Brazilian design. Its unique shape allows users to sit anatomically, conforming to the body's contours for maximum comfort. The Mole sofa and armchair sparked an international design trend that prioritized comfort and attention to scale over the rigid and antiseptic styles of contemporary design. Rodrigues adapted the Mole design three times, with this particular version being collapsible for easy export. The piece's solid wood structure remains unrestored, and it has new nubuck leather upholstery. Wood restoration is also included as part of the package.
