Robert Haussmann created his iconic metal ottoman RH-301 in chrome-plated flat steel back in 1954 as a homage to Mies van der Rohe, and since 1999, it has been produced by De Sede. Haussmann followed the Bauhaus principle of having the design and material match the intended purpose, while also paying tribute to Mies van der Rohe's work with his own interpretation. The RH-301 was awarded the "compaso d'oro" for its clever design. Moreover, it marked the beginning of a Swiss design association, which included pioneers Hans Eichenberger, Robert and Peter Haussmann, Theo Jakob, and Kurt Thut that would go on to make a significant impact. The RH-301 has a timeless appearance, thanks to its visible chrome-plated flat steel frame and high-quality leather upholstery, which is both aesthetic and elegant. A matching stool can be added to complete the set. The leather used for the RH-301 is Nappa leather that is lightly pigmented, 1.2 to 1.4 mm thick, and has natural creases, pores, and grains. It undergoes a meticulous tanning and dying process that preserves its natural quality while also protecting it. With time, the leather will age gracefully, giving it a charming patina. The RH-301 measures 66 W x 66 D x 41 H cm, with a seat height of 41 cm, and it is available in other upholstery options, including Living, Touch, Coloral, and Naturale.
