Today our wine director David Allen, Master of Wine, tastes Ramos Pinto's Late Bottled VIntage (LBV) Port 2015. Ramos Pinto is a Port House founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880. The house's aged Tawnies were historically the stars of the portfolio. The estate is made up of four different quintas. The flagship wine comes from the Quinta do Bom Retiro vineyard in the Pinhão parish of Cima Corgo. Pinto purchased this 62 hectare (153 acre) quinta in 1919. The Urtiga vineyard, covering just 4ha (10 acres) is located next door. The other major estate is Ervamoira, at Touça in the Douro Superior. Pinto bought this vineyard in 1974 and broke new ground by planting in vertical rows up the slopes, and planting by variety based on the vineyard's soil types, rather than in the traditional mix. Nearby is Quinta dos Bon Areas, which was added to the portfolio in 1985. This wine is made from fruit sourced from Bom Retiro and Ervamoira. The company became part of the Roederer group in 1990.
