The exceptional "J58" lounge chair crafted by Poul M. Volther for FDB-møbler during the mid 1950s is a true rarity for collectors and design enthusiasts alike. The eye-catching solid beech wood frame is naturally lacquered, featuring six slats that form the front legs, a slatted backrest and flax webbing that makes up the seat. Poul M. Volther was born in 1923 and was a prominent figure in the generation of Danish creatives who were inspired by Scandinavian functionalism. He began his career as a cabinetmaker before pursuing his studies at the Royal Danish Academy School of Arts & Crafts in Copenhagen. Volther even taught at the Royal Danish Academy School of Design, shaping the minds of countless young designers. In 1949, Volther was introduced to the FBD, a prominent Danish national cooperative association for consumer goods producers, by the renowned architect-designer Hans Wegner. At FDB, Volther worked under another Danish design icon, Børge Mogensen, before being appointed as the design director following Mogensen's departure in 1959. During his time at FDB, Volther created a range of chairs and sofas that have stood the test of time and are still widely used in Danish households today.
