Louis Poulsen's PH5 pendant by Poul Henningsen was first designed in 1958 and continues to be produced today. Henningsen was prompted to create the design in response to ongoing size and shape changes by incandescent bulb manufacturers. The pendant's name is given after the size of the main shade, measuring 50cm in diameter. Henningsen sought to improve the light source's colour reproduction properties within the PH5 by adding small red and blue shades to supplement the parts of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive. This subdued the light in the middle yellow-green region, where the eye is most sensitive. This design resulted in a glare-free pendant, regardless of how or with which light source it was installed. Despite today's light sources being significantly improved from when Henningsen designed the PH5, it continues to elevate modern interiors in a range of colors. Recently, the range was extended to include monochrome options in black, white, and ultra blue, while the PH5 Pastels series, featuring complementary monochrome colours and combos reflecting modern trends, has been introduced in 2022.
