The top shade of the fixture is shaped like a trumpet and provides upward illumination, while the three lower shades direct light downwards. To prevent glare, the fixture has a base reflector and a blue glare ring. For maximum brightness, the strongest light is situated directly under the fixture. The shades have a soothing matte white finish, ensuring a comfortable lighting experience. Poul Henningsen came up with the three-shade system in 1925/1926 and the first lights utilizing this system were designed for a Paris exhibition. Henningsen's collaboration with Louis Poulsen continued until his passing in 1967, and throughout his career, he aimed to create glare-free lighting that directs light where it is most needed. The four-shade system was introduced in 1931 as a chandelier alternative that could be installed at a greater height, and the PH four-shade fixture was intended to emit more horizontal light to illuminate walls and shelves. Although the fixture was removed from the Louis Poulsen standard collection in the 1940s, it was revamped in 1979 by Danish architects, Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen, and released as a larger variant (PH 6¬Ω/6) for the Charlottenborg exhibition hall. The architects introduced a tiny blue shade to tackle glare and an even more matte white painted shade to produce a more comfortable and consistent light ideal for exhibition spaces and museums, or for general use in lofty rooms. A smaller version (5/4¬Ω) was made for the Aarhus Concert Hall in 1984.
