The lighting produced by the fixture is completely free from glare, as stated by Poul Henningsen when he developed the PH 5 in 1958 following the success of his three-shade system. With downward and lateral light emission, the PH 5 illuminates itself while offering a warmer light tone created by an inside red cone and small blue reflector in the PH 5 Classic. The PH 5 Mini, a scaled-down version with a diameter of 30 cm, was also developed by Henningsen in response to changing incandescent bulb sizes and shapes. Despite installation or light source variations, the PH 5 has always remained glare-free, earning it a reputation as a classic. The pendant owes its name to the diameter of its main shade, which is 50 cm in the original PH 5 design. Henningsen also incorporated red and blue shades to enhance colour reproduction, reducing light in the yellow-green area where the eye is most sensitive. Louis Poulsen regularly updates the PH 5 design to keep up with new light sources. The pendant is available in a range of classic and modern colours, all featuring purple struts on the classic model and bronze-coloured struts on the others, with a reflector ring that contrasts the shade colours. To mark the 60th anniversary of the PH 5 in 2018 and 2019, Louis Poulsen introduced special editions with copper and brass shades paired with white tiers that reflect their surroundings. The metallic finish will develop a unique patina over time.
