Born in Copenhagen to the renowned Danish actress Agnes Henningsen, Poul Henningsen did not complete his studies in architecture, though he did attend The Technical School in Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14 and later, Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17. Initially, he focused on traditional functionalistic architecture, but his interests eventually shifted towards lighting design which is what he is best known for. Poul Henningsen's PH 5 fixture was introduced in 1958 as a continuation of his acclaimed three-shade system. This fixture emits light both downwards and laterally, thereby illuminating itself and providing 100% glare-free light. The PH 5 Classic features an inside red cone and a small blue reflector which create a warmer tone of light. The fixture is available in a variety of materials including spun aluminum and spun copper, and can be ordered in blue, rose, green, or red for the former and white, purple, or bronze for the latter. It uses a 6W LED light source and comes with a type A-15 bulb and a voltage of 120V.
