The PH-Artichoke pendant from Louis Poulsen is an everlasting masterpiece of lighting design that catches the eye. Designed by Poul Henningsen in 1957, this iconic pendant features twelve layers of brushed steel shades arranged in staggered railings. The warm and effective light partition is simply mesmerizing. Initially executed in copper for the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen, the Artichoke pendant's steel version was produced in the mid-1970s, with the white variant introduced in the early 1980s. Although only rough sketches exist, it is evident that the Artichoke pendant was developed rapidly, drawing from Henningsen's earlier designs. Poul Henningsen's first-ever 'PH' lamp was conceived after ten years of attempts at controlling and shading electrical lightning for economic, hygienic, and aesthetic purposes. He was deeply invested in glare, light color, and shadows and believed that estimating distance and object shape perception was crucial. His mother's emphasis on her wrinkles and complexion in the reddish half-shade of evening also left an imprint on his work. After years of experimentation, he achieved a complex use of different shades layered on top of one another, resulting in the first 'PH' lamp.
