Artifort was founded by Jules Wagemans in 1890 as an upholsterer in Maastricht. With Henricus Wagemans at the helm, the company expanded into a furniture factory in the 1920s and opened a showroom in Amsterdam. During the economic recession of the 1930s, H. Wagemans & Van Tuinen, as the company was then known, focused on developing a recognizable brand identity and creating distinctive, aesthetically pleasing furniture that prioritizes functionality, comfort, and quality with innovative use of materials. In 1928, the brand Artifort was introduced, derived from the Latin words "ars" meaning art or knowledge, "fortis" meaning strong or powerful, and reflecting their commitment to comfort.
