The ABCD sofa, created in 1968 and produced by Artifort, boasts a wooden and fiberglass structure with plush foam padding and stylishly reupholstered with Bergamo wool by Bisson-Bruneel. This iconic piece was designed by the renowned French designer, Pierre Paulin, who studied stone carving and pottery in the 1950s at the Ecole Camondo in Paris. Throughout his successful career, Paulin collaborated with Artifort for over four decades, creating many notable designs such as the Mushroom Chair, Ribbon Chair, and Tongue Chair. His pieces can be found in permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In 1970, Paulin was even commissioned by Le Mobilier National to decorate the private apartments of President George Pompidou at the Elysée Palace, and later furnished the office of François Mitterand. Paulin's work reflects his German roots, the precursors of modernism, and influences like the American design couple, Charles and Ray Eames. Despite his passing in 2009 in Montpellier, his legacy as a visionary and talented designer lives on.
