This rare piece, the iconic Slice Chair designed by Pierre Paulin of France, was produced by Artifort in the Netherlands and is a staple in modern art museums worldwide. The chair is in good condition, with only a slight scratch on the back (see picture) and light wear on the seat due to use (see picture). It weighs 18kg. Artifort was founded by Jules Wagemans in 1890 and evolved under the leadership of his son, Henricus, into a company that specialized in well-crafted, upholstered armchairs and seating in traditional styles. In the 1930s they acquired a patent for "Epeda" single-steel-wire springs, leading to comfortable furniture with less materials. With the guidance of Dutch designer Kho Liang Ie, Artifort's aesthetic became more biomorphic and vibrant, leading to collaborations with foreign designers such as Paulin and Harcourt. The Slice Chair's colorful design embodies the unique style of Artifort during its successful period in the 60s and 70s.
