The Armchair, originally designed by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s, has been relaunched in 2019 by Cassina, an Italian manufacturer. The Capitol Complex designed by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh, India, in 1951, which includes the Haute Cour, the Secretariat, and the Assemblée wing, inspired the chair's creation. The Cultural Heritage list of UNESCO included the complex in 2016, which celebrates an independent nation's openness to modernity. The chair's structure features a "V" support system with only the rests, connecting crossbars, and external joints between the arms and backrest being made from wood. The armrests' padding entirely envelops them, creating a rounded geometric shape that provides comfort while maintaining elegance. The chair comes in three versions: classic teak, stained black oak, and natural oak, paying homage to Pierre Jeanneret, who worked on the Chandigarh project, combining modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Pierre Jeanneret, overshadowed by his cousin Le Corbusier, contributed significantly to modernist architecture and design. In collaboration with Charlotte Perriand, he experimented with aluminum and wood and developed low-cost housing with Jean Prouvé. In the early 1950s, Jeanneret joined his cousin in Chandigarh to work on an urban-planning project that laid out the city and its furniture. After Le Corbusier abandoned the project, Jeanneret remained chief architect for 15 years. Cassina revisited furniture designs of renowned twentieth-century architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, and others in their I Maestri collection. The company has updated the manufacturing technology while strictly preserving the designs and functional concepts. Cassina has also manufactured iconic contemporary designs since the 1950s, ideated by the most prominent international designers. The Cassina Perspective is a concept, philosophy, and futuristic thought that furnishes living and dining spaces completely, incorporating an innovative soul and modern icons creating authentic, welcoming, and personal atmospheres.
