The Armchair, originally designed by Pierre Jeanneret circa 1950 and relaunched in 2019, is now manufactured by Cassina in Italy. This iconic piece was included in UNESCO's 2016 Cultural Heritage list and is part of the extraordinary architecture of Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, designed in 1951. The Haute Cour, the Secretariat, and the Assemblée wing make up the core of Chandigarh's Capitol Complex. The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same "V" support structure theme. The armchair's design features exposed wooden parts as rests, connecting crossbars, and external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests' padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape that offers an immediate sense of comfort without sacrificing elegance and simplicity. The reissue from Cassina offers the classic version in teak and two versions in natural and stained black oak as a tribute to Pierre Jeanneret, a key figure in the realization of Chandigarh. He combined essential forms with simple materials to create a meeting point between modern European ideals and the traditional Indian spirit during his experience in India that lasted until the end of his days in 1967. The Chandigarh project is considered Le Corbusier's most mature work that summarizes his poetics, technique, and ideology, consistent with his will to research and contribute to the culture of architecture and design. The materials used to manufacture this armchair include wood, fabric, and padding made of polyurethane foam. It's important to note that some of the images show other colors and variations of the model. However, only the item on the first image is currently available for sale. Actual colors may vary slightly from your monitor, as every computer monitor, laptop, tablet, and phone screen has a different capability to display colors, and everyone sees these colors differently. Pierre Jeanneret, though overshadowed by his cousin Le Corbusier, was a visionary of modernist architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment. Jeanneret's work imbued the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. He collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with Jean Prouvé. In the early 1950s, Jeanneret joined his cousin in Chandigarh, India, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though Corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, Jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project's chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. Finally, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century's best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Franco Albini, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Marco Zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. Cassina is known for manufacturing iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 1950s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today, Cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach, affirming its exclusive ability to furnish a home's living and dining spaces completely and iconically with The Cassina Perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought.
