The Chair designed by Pierre Jeanneret circa 1950, which has been relaunched in 2019, is produced by Italian manufacturer Cassina. It is a well-known piece of furniture in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex and is seen throughout the Secretariat offices. Made of solid wood, including side bars in an inverted “V” shape that support the armrests, it also features a backrest and seat woven with Indian cane, stretched across a wooden frame. This chair retains the “V” approach to side bars, but they are shorter and do not extend to the arms. The focus is on the seating/backrest sequence in Viennese woven cane, supported by two wooden profiles, and coplanar legs, which are simple but powerful at the same time. The product is a tribute to Pierre Jeanneret, who was a key figure in the realisation of Chandigarh, and his close and continuous contact with the local territory led him to combine essential forms with simple materials to create a meeting point between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. The Chandigarh project is considered Le Corbusier’s most mature work that summarises his poetics, technique, and ideology, and is consistent with his will to research and contribute to the culture of architecture and design. This chair is made of wood, with the backrest and seat in Indian cane, and comes with an upholstered cushion. Its dimensions are D: 58 cm, W: 51 cm, H: 81 cm, and a seat height of 43 cm. Please note that the images show other colours and variations of the model, however, the item that is selling is on the first image. Actual colours may vary due to different displays. Pierre Jeanneret was a visionary of modernist architecture and design who collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood and developed prefabricated housing with Jean Prouvé. He joined Le Corbusier in Chandigarh, India, in the early 1950s where they laid out the city and designed low-cost buildings and furniture. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects. Cassina is a company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. With an open, holistic approach, Cassina is always curious about the future of design.
