This Pierre Jeanneret 'Senat' chair is an original, unrestored piece made with beautifully grained Teak wood and old, damaged leatherette upholstery. Jeanneret designed these chairs for the high court of Chandigarh, India, though they were also used in other government buildings. This chair is a rare, high-back model dating back to 1959-60. Image 2 can be referenced for comparison with the model sold at the 'Galerie Patrick Seguin' in Paris. The chair still has its original early latex foam, covered by a more modern foam layer during its last reupholstery. The chair is structurally sound but needs significant restoration, including reupholstery and minor surface repairs to the wood. Given the abundance of Jeanneret knock-offs on the market, this authentic unrestored model allows for provenance and mid-century authenticity. We are happy to provide estimates for reupholstery costs. Jeanneret was a significant player in the development of Chandigarh, the new capital of Punjab post-Indian Independence. He worked on numerous programs for individual and collective accommodations covering all social classes, as well as designing furniture for public buildings. He also oversaw the coordination of oversight teams for the monumental Capitol esplanade designed by Le Corbusier. Jeanneret passed away in 1967 in Geneva.
