The Civil Bench, originally designed by Pierre Jeanneret in 1955 for the lodgings and apartments of the Indian city's Legislature Assembly, has been relaunched by Cassina in Italy as part of their Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection. The collection embodies a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit through essential forms and simple materials. The bench features three consecutive seat elements with a typical weaving pattern found in the collection, supported by a single frontal crossbar and two side supports in the shape of an inverted "V". The bench comes with a cushion for added comfort and protection. The Chandigarh project, where Jeanneret worked until the end of his life in 1967, was a collaboration with Le Corbusier and is considered their most mature work. It exemplifies their poetics, technique, and ideology in their pursuit of contributing to the culture of architecture and design. While Jeanneret is often overshadowed by Le Corbusier, he was a visionary in modernist architecture and design. Together they developed a new aesthetic vocabulary that prioritized function and order over embellishment.
