This is an Authentic Chandigarh 'Box' chair crafted from beautiful teak wood around 1960. It has undergone a gentle restoration and recaning process that has preserved the chair's original patina and character. Despite its half-century of use at Punjab University, old marks, splits, and knocks have been secured and highlighted to create a unique piece. The chair is one of three available, each with their own unique markings. Pierre Jeanneret, the Swiss architect and cousin of Le Corbusier, designed furniture for the modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret was the project's chief architect for over 15 years, and his work reflects a new aesthetic that emphasizes function and order over embellishment. His use of lighter materials such as cane and wood imbues modernist geometry with an added airiness. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, like Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouve, to experiment with aluminium, wood, and prefabricated housing. This chair comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and pre-restoration images.
