The Civil Bench, designed by Pierre Jeanneret in 1955 and manufactured by Cassina in Italy, is now part of the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection. This collection pays tribute to Jeanneret's use of simple materials and essential forms that strike a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Originally created for the apartments of the members of Chandigarh's Legislative Assembly, this bench features three seating elements with a single frontal crossbar and two inverted "V" side supports. The seat is woven, like other pieces in the collection, in Cassina's historic carpentry workshop. Optional cushions are available for added comfort. Jeanneret was a key figure in the creation of Chandigarh, where he combined traditional and modern design elements to embody the spirit of India. While overshadowed by his cousin Le Corbusier, Jeanneret was also a visionary of modernist design. He collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on aluminum and wood experiments and developed prefabricated housing with Jean Prouvé. Cassina's I Maestri collection revisits the work of 20th-century architects, preserving their designs while using modern technology to manufacture the furniture. The company's commitment to design excellence and cultural authority allows them to furnish living and dining spaces with modern icons that create warm, welcoming atmospheres.
