Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen, Master of Wine, tastes Penfold’s Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz from South Australia, relating it back to the 2014 vintage of the same wine tasted in a video made last month. Penfolds was founded in 1844 when Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold arrived in Australia from England. He purchased 500 acres (200 hectares) of land in what is now the Adelaide suburb of Magill. Penfolds grew to become one of the leading names in the Australian wine industry in the 20th century. Penfolds bought the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley in 1945 and started making the Bin 28 with fruit sourced from it in 1959. The best fruit from Kalimna has often been a key component of their flagship wine Grange. Today this wine is a multi-vineyard and multi-regional bled comprising fruit sourced from throughout South Australia. The wine ages for a year in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Production is approximately 2000 cases a year. Penfolds has had a complex history in recent decades with various mergers and acquisitions. Today, the company is a part of Treasury Wine Estates, an international group that includes brands such as Matua, Beaulieu VIneyard, Beringer and Wolf Blass.
