This steel cabinet, polished with chromium, features a trio of double doors that cleverly conceal shelving on either side, along with a cupboard equipped with a single metal-adorned drawer complete with compartments for small items or cutlery. The sleek slate insets on the top were exclusively designed by Paul Evans for Directional's Cityscape Collection, signed in the 1970s. A master of his craft, Evans was born in Pennsylvania in 1931 and honed his skills in metal work, silversmithing and goldsmithing. He went on to create stunning copper chests and sculpted steel-front cabinets before eventually becoming the designer for Directional Furniture in 1964, where he crafted a number of furniture lines. Of these, the Argente series, Sculpted Bronze series and Cityscape series gained particular popularity. Evans was adamant that every piece he created was made and finished by hand, and he always signed and dated each work of art. He was ahead of his time in combining traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, and his designs are now prized as highly coveted collector's items.
