This exceptional coffee table designed by Paul Evans is truly a masterpiece. Evans showcases his unique welding and construction skills in this piece, with a base resembling a skyline composition of various geometric elements in an asymmetrical layout. The postmodern design ideology is evident in this table, as Evans uses a rich autumnal color palette for each element, complemented by natural welded motifs. The table comes with a round glass top, allowing for a full appreciation of the sculptural base. It bears the signature and date of "Paul Evans 1972." Paul Evans was a prominent figure in the American Studio Craft Movement and contributed significantly to the establishment of Philadelphia as a center for Studio Craft in the late 1960s. He studied at various institutions before collaborating and sharing a showroom with Phillip Lloyd Powell in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he created unique furniture pieces with metal and sculpture. Evans then worked for the Directional Furniture Company in the 1960s, introducing new lines and selling his work throughout the US. Towards the end of the 1970s, Evans started using dazzling, reflective metal surfaces mixed with woods, replacing the crusty and textured surfaces from earlier works. Unfortunately, on March 6, 1987, the artist shut down his business and passed away the next day due to a heart attack.
