Paul Evans is a well-known and significant figure in the American studio craft movement of the 1960s and 70s. As a pioneering force in brutalism, he collaborated and shared a showroom with Phillip Lloyd Powell until he met the owner of Directional Furniture in 1964. Evans then created a line of six coffee tables to feature in Directional High Point's booth for the spring market, but the tables never made it to the showroom floor. Despite this setback, the tables gained enormous popularity when Directional Furniture displayed them in their New York City showroom, and orders for Evans' designs quickly began pouring in. Subsequently, Evans created more than 800 designs with Directional Furniture, including the highly publicized "Sculptured Metal" Collection in 1968. This wall-mounted console, shaped like double pyramids with a glass top, is a specific example of Evan's outstanding work in sculpted bronze. The pyramid on the left is double-signed by Evans and his assistant, TF, and dated 71. It's crucial to highlight that Directional Furniture showrooms were exclusively private, to-the-trade showrooms in New York City and Chicago. Therefore, only interior designers and their clients could order these custom-made pieces, leaving no inventory of furniture. Each furniture piece was unique and created to order by hand with careful craftsmanship. Eventually, Evans employed a team of almost 90 artisans who helped create his designs over two shifts. This may explain why not every piece is individually hand-signed. Thus, an early, hand-signed piece like this is even more desirable for collectors. This fine piece of art would complement any mid-century modern, modern, or even more traditional home decor. Display this piece with other brutalist pieces for a more contemporary vibe or pair it with curvy, softer furnishings for a more subdued, sophisticated atmosphere. In the gallery, this piece is displayed alongside two Vladimir Kagan cloud serpentine sofas and a Gio Ponti coffee table, and it catches everyone's attention.
