The "Deep Relief" sideboard, crafted by Paul Evans, exemplifies his signature style of welding and coloring steel doors in striking shades of red, gold, green, and bronze. The two doors boast a vertical fragment relief that adds a tactile quality to the design while the slate top features metal inlays and nails. Evans' hallmark is visible under the first door on the left, which bears the inscription "Paul Evans 69". As a prominent member of the American Studio Craft Movement, Evans was an influential figure in making Philadelphia a hub for this art form in the late 1960s. He discovered his passion for metalwork and sculpture during his stint in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he collaborated with Phillip Lloyd Powell. Evans later worked for the Directional Furniture company, where he created groundbreaking designs that were unfortunately too costly to produce. Despite this challenge and the untimely end of his career, Evans left behind an extensive and impressive oeuvre, marked by his intricate and dazzling metalwork.
