Evans' signature technique utilized epoxy applied over a steel frame to create a unique stalagmite design that showcases his mastery of both craftsmanship and experimental technology. The result is a truly brutalist style with vibrant, textured surfaces that perfectly complement the dark steel frames. As a member of the American Studio Craft Movement, Paul Evans is recognized as one of the most important artists of his time. His work, including these armchairs, is a testament to his creativity and skill. Born in Newton, Pennsylvania, Evans studied at several institutions, including the Philadelphia Textile Institute, the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsman, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. It was in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he collaborated with Phillip Lloyd Powell and their shared showroom became a center for Studio Craft in the late 1960s. In 1964, Evans began to work for Directional Furniture, where he pursued a new phase of his career. His unique designs and use of experimental techniques brought him great success, but his work was ultimately too costly. By the end of the 1970s, he ended his relationship with Directional while still continuing to introduce new lines. It was during this period that he began to create pieces with reflective metal surfaces that were sometimes mixed with woods. Despite the impressive size of his oeuvre, all of his works were handmade. Tragically, Evans passed away on March 7, 1987, the day after he shut down his business due to a heart attack. His legacy, however, lives on through his incredible designs for Directional and beyond.
