Paul Evans was a pioneering figure in brutalism and a prominent name in the American studio craft movement of the 1960s and 70s. He collaborated and shared a showroom with Phillip Lloyd Powell until 1964, when he met the owner of Directional Furniture and created a line of six coffee tables for their spring Market booth in High Point, NC. However, the tables never made it to the showroom floor and owner BG agreed to put them out in the New York City showroom. This resulted in a "viral" effect, with orders flooding in and eventually leading to Evans creating over 800 designs with Directional, beginning with the "Sculptured Metal" Collection in 1968. One notable piece is the swiveling throne chair upholstered in black leather and showcasing Evans' Sculpted bronze technique, with a signed and dated "PE 69" marking it as an early example of the line. It is important to note that Directional Furniture showrooms were private to-the-trade only, with each piece custom-made and hand-crafted. This particular piece has a beautiful patina and can blend into any contemporary environment, making a fashionable brutalist statement when paired with like pieces and toned up or down. The painting in the lead photo provides scale and provenance of the furniture piece can be provided upon request with purchase.
