Unveiled at the prestigious BaselWorld event in 2003, the Aqua Terra Railmaster pays homage to its late fifties predecessor. The distinguished model under scrutiny (ref. 2502.52.00) boasts a resilient stainless steel case measuring 39.2mm, complemented by a corresponding bracelet. The original OMEGA Railmaster made its debut in 1957, coinciding with the iconic Speedmaster release, succeeding a timepiece crafted for the British Royal Air Force in 1953. Tailored for scientists, technicians, electricians, and railway laborers exposed to potent electric fields, the watch featured a dual antimagnetic case shielding the movement from detrimental electromagnetic influences. Constructed from Staybrite stainless steel, the exterior case exhibited a polished beveled bezel, solid lugs, fortified crystal, and a screw-in back with an O-ring gasket ensuring water resistance. Internally, a protective cap, casing ring, and a 1mm thick dial crafted from soft iron provided a defense against magnetic fields exceeding 900 Oersted, far surpassing the conventional antimagnetic watch's 60 Oersted threshold. The contemporary Railmaster preserves the original's aesthetic with a matte black dial flaunting luminous Arabic numerals at the quarters, accompanied by luminous triangular hour markers and a central Railmaster insignia. The hands, featuring a facetted Dauphine-style design with a pointed minute hand, incorporate luminous accents for optimal visibility in varying lighting conditions. A modern domed sapphire crystal, anti-reflective and scratch-resistant, secured by a polished stainless steel bezel, adds a contemporary touch to the watch's classic silhouette. In contrast, the new Railmaster's interior showcases OMEGA's advanced Co-Axial Escapement movement, replacing the vintage calibre 30SC T4. The updated OMEGA calibre 2403 highlights hours, minutes, and central seconds on a sleek, uncluttered dial. This self-winding Co-Axial movement, certified as a chronometer by the prestigious COSC, boasts a 44-hour power reserve and features exquisite Geneva wave décor, circular graining, and gold-plated engravings. Leveraging innovative technology, the OMEGA Co-Axial Escapement minimizes friction in the drive train, ensuring long-term precision. The Railmaster series exclusively offers Co-Axial movements in 41mm and 38mm case sizes. With options of a steel bracelet featuring a safety clasp or brown/black leather straps with a foldover clasp, the collection comprises six distinctive models. Like all Aqua Terra timepieces, these models include a screw-in crown and case back for water resistance up to 150 meters, with the latter showcasing a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal offering a pristine view of the watch's intricate movement.
