The Mercury Monterey was a full-size car produced by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company between 1952 and 1974. The first-generation Monterey was introduced in 1952 as a top-tier model and a replacement for the Mercury Eight. The 1952 Mercury Monterey featured a sleek, modern design with a curved windshield and a distinctive "bullseye" grille. It was powered by a 125-horsepower flathead V8 engine paired with a three-speed manual transmission or a Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. Standard features on the 1952 Mercury Monterey included power steering, power brakes, dual exhaust, and a heater/defroster. Optional extras included a radio and a power seat. In 1953, the Monterey received a facelift with a new grille and revised rear styling. A two-door hardtop model was also added to the lineup. The following year, a 161-horsepower Y-block V8 engine became available. Throughout the first-generation's production run, the Monterey was known for its smooth ride and luxurious interior. It was available in a variety of body styles including a convertible, sedan, hardtop coupe, and estate wagon. The Mercury Monterey was a popular car in the 1950s and played a role in the emerging hot rod and custom car culture. Today, the first-generation Monterey is a sought-after collector car and a symbol of American mid-century automotive design.
