The MR10 chair, inspired by a 1924 design for a cantilevered chair by Mart Stam, was gracefully brought to life by Mies van der Rohe and officially introduced at the 1927 Stuttgart exhibition. It continues to be produced to this day, boasting an elegantly proportioned chromium nickel plated steel cantilever frame that curves outward at the top of the back. The front of the seat features a curved tubular steel stretcher rod that is attached to the right and left sides of the frame. The chair's back and seat are seamlessly integrated into a single piece of black leather, resulting in a cohesive and polished final product. The original manufacturers were Jo. Muller of Berlin, followed by Gebruder Thonet of Vienna and Berlin. Mies van der Rohe patented his innovative design, which incorporated the principle of a resilient cantilever, and received generous royalties from that patent until his departure from Germany. The MR chair and armchair made their debut at the Weissenhof Exhibition in Stuttgart in 1927, and were featured again at the Exposition de la Mode, where Mies and Lilly Reich designed the chic Café Samt und Seide, complete with leather-slung MR chairs and tubular steel stools and tables from the MR series. This vintage piece is in excellent condition, with only a few minor leather scuffs and light rust on the chrome base, as is characteristic of genuine vintage items. Please note that this chair is not a product of Knoll.
