The visitor chair has been coated entirely in a striking shade of red reminiscent of blood. This piece of furniture was originally created in 1934-35 for the Guébriant sanatorium by architecture duo Abraham and Jacques Henri Le Même, with interior design by Jules Leleu. The French Army sponsored this project, which included a total of 146 rooms, each furnished with a variety of items such as a built-in bedside bed, a hanging desk, a two-tray pedestal table, and a visitor chair. All of the furniture was crafted from folded sheet metal with the exception of the curved tube pedestal. While the workshop of Jean Prouvé in Nancy, France produced the sash windows and railings for the balconies, it's likely that the chairs, armchairs, and pedestal tables were designed by either Jacques Henri Le Même or Jules Leleu, with the visitor chair specifically being Leleu's creation. It's worth noting that several aspects of the design and construction of this furniture bear similarities to other pieces created by Prouvé, particularly the beds and desks. In fact, the bed bases and longitudinal members are virtually identical to those used in Prouvé's 1932 Cité Universitaire de Nancy beds, and many details of the construction of the desk and bed evoke other examples of Prouvé's work. Shortly after the success of the furniture crafted for the University City of Nancy, the workshop began developing designs for the Guébriant sanatorium and furnished other Alpine sanatoriums for Abraham and Jacques Henri Le Même. One set of this furniture remains in the Museum of the 1930s in Boulogne Billancourt. However, this particular visitor chair has been sourced from the Guébriant sanatorium itself and is in used condition with some minor paint chips on the surface. Its dimensions are H 88 cm, L 61 cm, and L 54 cm. This piece is a unique and captivating example of 20th-century design history, harkening back to a time when form and function were inextricably linked.
