This rare and outstanding set by Thonet - Mundus, featuring the "Fledermaus" design, boasts an original patina and is upholstered with Backhausen fabric that is in excellent condition. The structure and padding of the set is also in top-notch shape. While the model can be traced back to Thonet's 1907 catalog, further research indicates that it may have already existed in the apartment of architect Gustav Siegel by 1905. This raises questions about the original designer of the "Fledermaus" model, which was previously attributed to Josef Hoffmann; evidence suggests that it may have been a joint effort between Siegel's technical studio and Hoffmann. Notably, this particular model is distinguished by its circular armrests, as opposed to the more common rhombus ones found in J. & J. Kohn's version. As a result, this highly coveted and hard-to-find design icon holds a special place in furniture enthusiasts' hearts.
