This set offers a rare opportunity to obtain five (5) 'Birillo' bar-height barstools, originally designed by Joe Colombo for Zanotta, Italy in 1971 and retailed by ICF New York. Each chair bears the Zanotta embossed logo and design information, with some chairs also featuring ICF New York retailer labels. These are coveted early year productions, making them an excellent choice for collectors and modern art and design investors. The vintage patent leatherette upholstery is a striking red that contrasts well with the white fiberglass bases. Finding even one Birillo stool is difficult, let alone a matched set of five. This quintessential Post-Modern design is often mislabeled 'Brillo' or 'Brillio', but the correct spelling is 'Birillo', as documented in the 1978 Zanotta catalogue. The chairs are versatile and could work well in a variety of interiors, from Post-Modern and Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary and Zen/Minimalism. They are also suitable for commercial spaces such as hotel lobbies, creative design studios, or high-rise executive offices. The fiberglass is in very good vintage condition with light wear and minor sun fading, while the leatherette shows light patina and wear with a couple of small blemishes that are hard to notice. One stool is slightly darker in color, which we believe was due to being stored away. The chrome is bright and clean with very light patina, and overall, the set is attractive and ready for immediate use.
