Large surface areas of fiberglass reinforced with plastic were used for the first time in the design of Elda, an armchair created in 1963 and first published in 1965 by Comfort and later by F.LLi Longhi in the 2000s. Joe Colombo took inspiration from the hulls of ships and utilized naval technology for the design. The armchair has a freestanding structure that sits on a swivel base and features padded cushions covered in leather. Its enveloping shape provides a sense of isolation and acoustic separation within a room. The armchair is named after Colombo's wife. The foam is made of polyurethane and the leather used is Nero Madras Alce, a semi-aniline leather. Semi-aniline leather undergoes a vegetable bath and has a dye that deeply penetrates the leather, creating a thin protective layer that preserves the natural characteristics of the hide. It is treated to be more resistant compared to aniline leather, with better resistance to light and improved breathability.
