This is a restored S.C.A.L. double daybed designed by the influential French industrial and furniture designer, Jean Prouvé. Manufactured by Ateliers Prouve around 1950, the bed features a sturdy metal frame and new upholstery. Despite some minor wear consistent with its age and use, it remains in good condition, retaining a beautiful patina. Born in Nancy, France, Jean Prouvé came from an artistic family, with his father VIctor Prouve collaborating with prominent Art Nouveau artists as a ceramicist. Trained as a metalsmith and educated in engineering, Jean Prouvé established his own workshop in 1923, producing modern metal furniture and collaborating with other notable French designers such as Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand. Throughout his career, he considered himself more of an engineer and constructor than a designer, focusing on materials, connections, and production efficiency to create innovative designs such as his notable method of folding sheet metal.
