Originating from 1946 and significantly divergent from other designs from the same time period, the Freeform Sofa embodies Isamu Noguchi's sentimental quality in design. Promotional materials and publications highlight the sculptural characteristics of the Sofa and Ottoman, which are likened to "flat, curved river stones that have been gently shaped over time by the flowing stream, creating a svelte and fluid organic form." These evaluations are spot on, as the Freeform Sofa remains one of the most refined and graceful sofas ever conceived. The Freeform Sofa and Ottoman were manufactured in limited quantities circa 1950, with the handful of remaining pieces fetching record prices at auctions. Finally, in 2002, the VItra Design Museum obtained the license to create a wholly authentic replica. The featured set, comprising one Sofa and one Ottoman, was created in 2007 and is in immaculate pre-owned condition. The fabric is pristine and has faded beautifully over time, adding to its charm.
