This is an exceptional Early Large Model K Akari lamp that is in fantastic condition. The lamp was designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951 and was produced by Ozeki & Co., Ltd. It is a new old stock item, which means it has never been used before. The Model K is a beautiful, diamond-shaped pendant that is part of the Akari series. This particular lamp features the earliest manufacturer's mark, which is a red sun and half-moon insignia. It is crafted from Japanese washi paper, bamboo, and metal. Isamu Noguchi was inspired to create the Akari lamps during his visit to Gifu, Japan, where he discovered the traditional methods of lantern and umbrella-making from mulberry bark paper and bamboo. The production process for Akari lamps follows these traditional Gifu methods, and each lamp is handmade. The construction process involves making washi paper from mulberry tree bark, stretching bamboo ribbing across wooden forms, and gluing the paper strips onto the framework. The wooden form is then removed, leaving a resilient paper shape that can be collapsed for packing.
