This is a set of four New-old-stock Model 45XL Akari lamps, designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951 and produced by Ozeki & Co., Ltd. These square-shaped pendants are made of Japanese washi paper, bamboo, and metal, and feature the earliest manufacturer's mark - a red sun and half-moon insignia. Isamu Noguchi utilized traditional Japanese materials to bring modern design to the home, and the warm glow of light cast through the handmade paper on a bamboo frame creates a poetic, ephemeral, and tentative ambiance. These lamps were handcrafted using traditional Japanese Gifu lantern-making methods, and some are still packed in the original stamped paper.
