This Akari lamp in excellent condition is one of the earliest models designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951 and produced by Ozeki & Co., Ltd. It is part of the globe shaped pendant in the Akari series, specifically the Model 30D. Four items are available as new old stock, each showcasing the earliest manufacturer's mark of a red sun and half-moon insignia. The lamp is a combination of Japanese washi paper, bamboo, and metal materials. Isamu Noguchi utilized traditional Japanese methods of construction in making the Akari lamps with washi paper from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, bamboo ribbing, and sculptural molded wood forms. Each Akari lamp is resilient, collapsible, and handcrafted, making them poetic, ephemeral, and tentative as Noguchi himself describes them. The lamps are still packed in the original stamped paper, adding a nice touch to these timeless works of modern design.
