Val Bertoia's Corner Sound Sculpture, created in 2008, is a magnificent piece that is part of the iconic Bertoia Sonambient series. Featuring 11 copper tops silvered to monel rods, then silvered to a brass base, this sculpture bears the inscription B-1524 on its base and comes with an authentication title from Bertoia Studio. The sculpture was directly acquired from Bertoia Studio, which was founded by Harry Bertoia, a renowned designer and sculptor, and his son Val in the early 1970s. During this period, the Bertoias produced hundreds of unique sound sculptures that reflected Harry's idea of Sonambient - the creation of a spatial and tonal environment through sound sculptures. These sculptures were of different shapes, lengths and thicknesses, and crafted to achieve a wide range of gentle and sharp sounds. Harry's experimentations with harmonic balance resulted in pure, one-of-a-kind tones that were organic and mysterious, resonating and flowing into each other when touched, struck or brushed. Val Bertoia, who was born in Santa Monica in 1949, grew up in Pennsylvania, where his father established his studio and worked with Hans and Florence Knoll. Val studied Mechanical Engineering at the Indiana Institute of Technology in the 1960s and later worked with Harry in making and installing large-scale sculptures for architects around the world. By 1979, Val continued his father's legacy by taking over the sculpture business.
