Incredible in color and condition, this Harry Bertoia for Knoll model Bird armchair with ottoman from 1980 still retains its original label. The chair and ottoman are comprised of black lacquered steel wire grids with custom ordered upholstered pads. The armchair features a seat hole and sled legs with a high backrest, while the ottoman has a rectangular seat and sled legs as well. This is the first edition from Knoll in 1956 and was created by Bertoia as light sculptures crossing in the sky. He meticulously studied space, shapes, and steel properties to achieve the extreme lightness of the chair and ottoman. They were initially made by hand with each wire bent and welded, and only a few copies were produced before Bertoia and Bob Savage of Design & Development created an industrial and serial production. Hand delivery is available to anywhere en route from Buffalo, NY, including New York City.
