The Bird armchair with ottoman was designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll in the 1970s. It features a black lacquered steel wire grid construction with new upholstery crafted by a skilled design upholsterer. The armchair boasts a high backrest and sled legs, with a seat hole forming in the center. The accompanying ottoman has a rectangular seat and sled legs as well. This first edition piece was created in 1956 by Bertoia, who designed it as a delicate, aerial sculpture. To achieve its lightweight appearance, Bertoia studied shape, space, and the properties of steel. Each wire was bent by hand before being welded, and the initial collection only had a limited number of copies before Bertoia and Bob Savage of Design & Development established industrial production methods.
