Harry Bertoia, an American artist, furniture designer, and expert in sound art sculpture, created a welded bronze sculpture in the 1970s that remains untitled. Bertoia was born in San Lorenzo, Pordenone, Italy, and migrated to Detroit as a teenager to pursue his passion for the arts. He enrolled in Cass Technical High School to learn English and study art and design, including handmade jewelry making from 1930-1936. Bertoia continued his education at the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, which is now known as the College for Creative Studies, in 1936. The following year, Bertoia was awarded a scholarship to attend the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he had the opportunity to meet Walter Gropius, Edmund N. Bacon, Ray and Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll for the first time.
