The Bird chair and ottoman were designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll International. The original version from the 1970s had since been reupholstered by Knoll International as the original cover deteriorated completely. Despite being slightly faded, the current cover is in excellent condition without any stains or damage. The ottoman measures 60 x 36 x 42 cm. Bertoia was an Italian-American artist, sound art sculptor, and modern furniture designer. He started out as a painting student but became a jewelry design and metal work instructor. Bertoia also learned welding and experimented with sound sculpture. In the 1950s, he designed five wire pieces including the diamond chair for Knoll. According to Bertoia, the chairs were largely made of air and sculpture, and space passes through them.
