This pendant-chandelier lamp boasts a large size and is topped with grey lacquered metal and a high gloss opal acrylic shade. It accommodates a maximum bulb wattage of 200W and bears the Louis Poulsen mark inside. Designed by the renowned Danish designer Hans J. Wegner in 1975, the Opala lamp hails from the 'Opala' series originally intended for a Copenhagen hotel. Wegner was an exceptionally prolific designer, leaving behind an incredible legacy of over 1000 pieces - of which lighting designs were relatively scarce. Wegner's style is synonymous with Danish modern design, characterized by his preference for natural wood, expressive lines, and simple, pure forms that are manufactured with excellent quality and a deep respect for tradition. After completing an apprenticeship in cabinetmaking at the tender age of fourteen, Wegner went on to study furniture design in Copenhagen. Throughout his career, Wegner's work was frequently recognized with major awards, including the Lunning prize in 1951 and the grand prix of the Milan Triennale in the same year. In 1943, he established his own design office in Gentofte and continued to produce furniture that continues to inspire and influence modern designers.
