This set is comprised of the largest version of Hans Wegner's 'FH 1935/4' bench, as well as a pair of 'FH 1936' lounge chairs, fashioned out of walnut and beech wood. These pieces were created by Wegner as part of his exploration into molded plywood as a furniture material, leading to several iterations of his iconic 'Shell Chair.' The bench is a rare model, designed in response to a special request made in 1948, and is larger than the more commonly found two-seater version. The 'GE1935' sofa and 'GE1936' armchairs were born out of a design competition held by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1948, where they garnered press attention even though they did not win. The Fritz Hansen company produced this collection for only two years, making this four-seater model a particularly uncommon find. Hans Wegner was a highly regarded Danish furniture designer, known for his deep understanding of materials and construction techniques, as well as his dedication to creating innovative and expressive designs. Though he was a functionalist at heart, Wegner was not limited by dogmatic rules and imbued his pieces with sculptural flair. He designed over 500 pieces of furniture throughout his career. The chairs and sofa are accompanied by checkered cushions, which can be removed if desired. Provenance information is available upon request. Dimensions of the lounge chair: H 69 x W 67 x D 62 cm, with a seat height of 43 cm.
